Spring Racewear Guide 2012

Emma is owner of Headonism Millinery and today shares some of her favourite Spring racewear with us. Headonism recently designed headpieces for Ange Lang for Perth Fashion Festival.

The Spring Racing Carnival kicks off here in Perth at Ascot this coming Saturday, 20th October. There are so many trends to choose from this season.  Pastels, floral, neon, nude and classic black and white.  There’s so much fun to be had and I can’t wait to see the creations the stylish ladies of Perth come up with at the Myer Fashions on the Field competition!

If you haven’t found an outfit yet there is still time to find something.  Here are a few accessible choices ranging from high street to designer.

Don’t forget the most important part that will make or break your outfit – your headwear. There are a number of milliners in Perth each with their own unique style that can make you a bespoke piece to go with your outfit.

This floaty, feminine David Lawrence floral dress is so ‘spring’ like.  It would look lovely with a headpiece that focuses on the pink in the dress.

David Lawrence Oriental Floral Silk Dress $249

This Cue dress is in such a pretty, minty shade and is easy to accessorise with a statement headpiece with neutral bag and shoes.

Simple nude tones are always a winner.  I love the peplum detail on this Nicola Finetti dress.
This Saba dress is also a fantastic choice.
You could match this dress with this beautifully detailed tonal Headonism Millinery headpiece.

Myer stylist AndAndrea picked this Nicola Finetti number as one of her spring racing choices and I have to agree it is this seasons racing perfection in it’s ladylike hue.
Lemon is a gorgeous, fresh springtime colour and this feminine dress would be perfectly teamed with this headpiece.

Classic Black and White elegance – I absolutely love this clean understated Saba dress, the silky back detail makes it super elegant.  Also available in a nude which is also beautiful.
Finally for something quite different I really like the idea of silver and navy, you could accessorise the dress with a navy belt to tie in the headpiece.

Winter Wardrobe Warmers

I’m off to Melbourne for the weekend, and I can’t even tell you how excited I am!  WOO-HOO! ! I think I’m going to be in for a massive shock with the weather, as we have been having the most incredibly mild autumn over here on the west side.  Today is a top of 24 degrees and the next few days are looking pretty similar.  I’ve just checked the forecast for Melbourne and it’s going to be a top of 16 degrees for the whole weekend. BRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!

I’m compiling a wish list of winter wardrobe warmers to help me brave the chill:

Forever New Gianna Faux Fur Stole $34.99

I adore the rich hue of this fur stole, it would compliment any winter outfit and looks lovely and soft to snuggle into.

Saba Camel Coat $599

This camel coat is an absolute classic and would be a great investment piece that would last for years and years to come.

Bardot Leather Gloves $24.98

I love the texture of these gloves, they would be perfect for keeping my mitts toasty and warm and are a total bargain!

Sportsgirl Sweater Dress $39.95

I’m a big fan of the sweater dress, you can dress it down with tights and flats during the day, and then add heeled boots and some glamorous accessories for evening. And for this price, how can you resist?

Forever New Phoenix Chevron Coat $149.99

I love this faux fur coat, it screams rock chick and would look great teamed with the over-the-knee boots below.

Tony Bianco Livia Boots $229.95

I really need a classic pair of black boots, and as much as I would love to buy heels, motherhood means that practicality rules, so these gorgeous over-the-knee boots are the perfect compromise.

All that Glitters

In my Winter Wardrobe post last Friday, I stumbled across an amazing pair of sequin pants from Bardot. Then Andrea from Fox in Flats issued a sparkle dare this week, and I became  obsessed with finding the ultimate sequin skirt. I put my quest out there over Twitter and amazingly, Andrea put her shopping prowess to the test and came up with this post dedicated to my search for a sequin skirt – how’s that for service? In the meantime, I had uncovered a whole host of other glittery garments that I just can’t take my eyes off.

Bardot Sequin Pants – $139.95

These are the sensational sequin pants from Bardot. You could rock them with a black sheer shirt as shown here, or throw a faux fur vest over the top for texture overload!

Asos Gold Sequin Dress – $89.21

This dress is a beautifully classic shape and the gold sequins are just heavenly. It’s such a knockout that it doesn’t need anything more than a fabulous pair of heels.

Sportsgirl Sassy Collar Necklace – $29.95

I’m loving fun collars at the moment. This could be a fab look for work with a pencil skirt, heels and top. Or you could wear it with a t-shirt and jeans for a cheeky day time look.

Saba Sequin Tank – $169

This shiny tank would look amazing with leather pants / leggings, a jacket and sky high heels. It would be perfect for a hot dinner date or a fun night out with the girls.

Zoe Wittner Amber Red Sequin Shoes – $169.95

These shoes should be called ‘There’s No Place Like Home’ and are sure to make your day, and everyone else’s for that matter!  It would be so much fun to look down at your feet and see all those gorgeous red glittery sequins shining right back at you.

Forever New Vanessa Sequin Stripe Tunic – $89.95

This is such a great way to rock sequins during the day. You could wear it to work with black skinny pants, heels and some glittery neck candy; or during the day with leggings and loafers.

How have you rocked Andrea’s sparkle dare this week?

Have you been on a quest to find a special glittery something?

Ultimate Autumn Racewear Guide 2012

My gorgeous friend Emma, expert on everything racewear, has very kindly compiled a guest post today to give us the inside fashion tips for the upcoming racing season. Enjoy! Amy x

Emma from Headonism Millinery

All around Australia racing fashion enthusiasts are getting excited because it’s time to get our autumn racing outfits ready!

Here in Perth, Oaks day is held at Ascot on the 31st March, Amy and I often attend and we always have a blast.  On this day Myer hosts Fashions of the Field.  The prize pool is amazing and the field is always hotly contested.

If you want to seriously compete at Fashions on the Field there are some ‘rules’ when dressing  for autumn.  Be sure your skirt isn’t too short, wear stockings, gloves, carry a clutch and in most cases wearing your hair up will make you look more polished.  Think ladylike, classy and elegant.

I’ve identified the main trends for this racing season and I will explain a little more about them below. My one rule for my outfit is I have to be able to wear all or most elements of the outfit again for normal occasions. I don’t want to spend a lot of money on an outfit I’ll only wear for one day.

Hats, ‘Hatinators’ and Fascinators

Think rich textures and colour. Felt, leather or even barramundi skin! This winter a very popular shape to wear is the fedora.  Gucci made this style very on trend for winter 2012.  Their shape is quite large but smaller brims are available.

Gucci Fedora

Another popular shape is a pill box or a button. Neat and always classy, I’d definitely wear a side bun or French roll with this shape.

Remember you don’t have to buy your hat off the department store ‘shelf’, a milliner can make you a totally unique headpiece to match your outfit.

The peplum is out of control this season. It is everywhere and I love it! You can’t get much more ladylike.  Ellery (available in Myer) is a seriously modern take on a 1940’s look.  Other brands with the look include Yeojin Bae and Cue.

Kym Ellery with some of her beautiful modern peplum creations.

Autumn Tones

The beautiful rich jewel tones of autumn are so complimentary on most people.  There is a lot of maroon/plum/burgundy in the stores but you don’t need to wear this colour head to toe.  Mix in the popular mustard yellow, rich blues, teal and forest green that are around.  Leopard print accessories will tie in well and make the outfit more edgy.

This pattern isn’t everywhere (yet) but a number of stores are trending it such as Carla Zampatti, Saba and Marcs.  Always a classic look and black and white is a safe bet. Here Anna Dello Russo really rocks the look!

Marcs Houndstooth pleated skirt $179               Anna Dello Russo

I just adore the digital silk floral prints that are in fashion.  They are feminine and are a perfect foray into autumn in our warm Australian climate.  Camilla & Marc,  Lisa Ho and Jigsaw do some beautiful pieces.

Lisa Ho Dress $529                           Lisa Ho Dress $589

I am obsessed with this clutch from Marcs, it is large enough to carry some make up for touch ups and all your racing winnings!

Marcs Clutch Available in 3 Colours $149

Cue also has a selection of fantastic clutches.

Fur stole

The Australian climate sometimes doesn’t allow for this in March but how glamorous does a (faux) fur stole look!  Perhaps rock an Aurelio Costerella feather bolero instead?

Jigsaw Mongolian Collar $149

Aurelio Costarella Feather Bolero

A look that I think is very classy and fashionable for autumn is a pump with a colour blocked toe.  I love these Mimco ones with their special Perspex heel.  They are available in a couple of colours.  Saba and Milana (available at DJ’s)  also have some very  nice pairs available.   If you want to modernise a look that you feel is too classic, then go for a shoe with more of a platform.

Mimco Imperial Midi Pump $199.20

Saba Camden Shoe  $179

I really hope that you like some of these ideas.  Good luck at races!
