Spring Racewear Guide 2012

Emma is owner of Headonism Millinery and today shares some of her favourite Spring racewear with us. Headonism recently designed headpieces for Ange Lang for Perth Fashion Festival.

The Spring Racing Carnival kicks off here in Perth at Ascot this coming Saturday, 20th October. There are so many trends to choose from this season.  Pastels, floral, neon, nude and classic black and white.  There’s so much fun to be had and I can’t wait to see the creations the stylish ladies of Perth come up with at the Myer Fashions on the Field competition!

If you haven’t found an outfit yet there is still time to find something.  Here are a few accessible choices ranging from high street to designer.

Don’t forget the most important part that will make or break your outfit – your headwear. There are a number of milliners in Perth each with their own unique style that can make you a bespoke piece to go with your outfit.

This floaty, feminine David Lawrence floral dress is so ‘spring’ like.  It would look lovely with a headpiece that focuses on the pink in the dress.

David Lawrence Oriental Floral Silk Dress $249

This Cue dress is in such a pretty, minty shade and is easy to accessorise with a statement headpiece with neutral bag and shoes.

Simple nude tones are always a winner.  I love the peplum detail on this Nicola Finetti dress.
This Saba dress is also a fantastic choice.
You could match this dress with this beautifully detailed tonal Headonism Millinery headpiece.

Myer stylist AndAndrea picked this Nicola Finetti number as one of her spring racing choices and I have to agree it is this seasons racing perfection in it’s ladylike hue.
Lemon is a gorgeous, fresh springtime colour and this feminine dress would be perfectly teamed with this headpiece.

Classic Black and White elegance – I absolutely love this clean understated Saba dress, the silky back detail makes it super elegant.  Also available in a nude which is also beautiful.
Finally for something quite different I really like the idea of silver and navy, you could accessorise the dress with a navy belt to tie in the headpiece.

Myer Perth VIP Evening

After dodging rain drops and puddles while zipping through Perths CBD, I arrived at Myer feeling slightly windswept but oh so excited for an evening of friends, designers, fashion and fun.

The floral arrangements were simply stunning and helped to set the spring time mood despite the stormy, wintery weather outside.

Resident Myer stylist Andrea and blogger at And Andrea was rocking Sass & Bide. She has been a total standout during Perth Fashion Festival with her colourful and clever fashion choices.  She also happens to be one of the loveliest, most genuine people you’ll ever meet. (Spot the gorgeous Sarah in the left of the background. I loved her very chic outfit.)

One of my most fabulous long time friends Carol was a guest at the event and met her favourite designer Wayne Cooper.  She was just a little bit excited and managed to tell him ‘I’m a big fan!’.

Gorgeous models ready to hit the stage wearing Wayne Cooper and Aurelio Costarella.

Aurelio Costarella talks fashion magic with guests, he told me he loves these kinds of events where he gets to meet people and have a chat.

I loved Sammi’s gorgeous black dress and lime neon bag, we got chatting and I discovered she was a photographer and a mum of two who was enjoying a rare night out.

Keely looked simply sensational in Sass & Bide, I loved her matching neon iPhone cover and triangle bag. And that hair and those lips! Super swoon!

Special guest Kris Smith was a big hit with the ladies, and was only too happy to pose for photos with a long line of eager fans.

Andrea and I decided to have some fun and had a mini photo session during the event, Andrea was loving the back detailing on my Zhivago dress and I have to confess… I was loving it too!

This tunic dress is the perfect way to rock leopard print during the day. It could be dressed up with a blazer, tights and boots for the office or with leggings and flats for the school run.

This Audrey Hepburn style rust coloured ponti dress is a bargain for $37.50! It would be perfect for the office with pumps and some gold neck candy or with flats and a cardigan for the park.

Dotti Dalmation Spot Cardigan – $29.95

I’ve really been loving Dotti recently, they have some great pieces at affordable prices. This cardigan is a classic example, it would be a fabulous addition to any winter wardrobe. I would wear it out for coffee with the girls with ballet flats, a pearl bracelet and a pony tail.

Ultimate Autumn Racewear Guide 2012

My gorgeous friend Emma, expert on everything racewear, has very kindly compiled a guest post today to give us the inside fashion tips for the upcoming racing season. Enjoy! Amy x

Emma from Headonism Millinery

All around Australia racing fashion enthusiasts are getting excited because it’s time to get our autumn racing outfits ready!

Here in Perth, Oaks day is held at Ascot on the 31st March, Amy and I often attend and we always have a blast.  On this day Myer hosts Fashions of the Field.  The prize pool is amazing and the field is always hotly contested.

If you want to seriously compete at Fashions on the Field there are some ‘rules’ when dressing  for autumn.  Be sure your skirt isn’t too short, wear stockings, gloves, carry a clutch and in most cases wearing your hair up will make you look more polished.  Think ladylike, classy and elegant.

I’ve identified the main trends for this racing season and I will explain a little more about them below. My one rule for my outfit is I have to be able to wear all or most elements of the outfit again for normal occasions. I don’t want to spend a lot of money on an outfit I’ll only wear for one day.

Hats, ‘Hatinators’ and Fascinators

Think rich textures and colour. Felt, leather or even barramundi skin! This winter a very popular shape to wear is the fedora.  Gucci made this style very on trend for winter 2012.  Their shape is quite large but smaller brims are available.

Gucci Fedora

Another popular shape is a pill box or a button. Neat and always classy, I’d definitely wear a side bun or French roll with this shape.

Remember you don’t have to buy your hat off the department store ‘shelf’, a milliner can make you a totally unique headpiece to match your outfit.

The peplum is out of control this season. It is everywhere and I love it! You can’t get much more ladylike.  Ellery (available in Myer) is a seriously modern take on a 1940’s look.  Other brands with the look include Yeojin Bae and Cue.

Kym Ellery with some of her beautiful modern peplum creations.

Autumn Tones

The beautiful rich jewel tones of autumn are so complimentary on most people.  There is a lot of maroon/plum/burgundy in the stores but you don’t need to wear this colour head to toe.  Mix in the popular mustard yellow, rich blues, teal and forest green that are around.  Leopard print accessories will tie in well and make the outfit more edgy.

This pattern isn’t everywhere (yet) but a number of stores are trending it such as Carla Zampatti, Saba and Marcs.  Always a classic look and black and white is a safe bet. Here Anna Dello Russo really rocks the look!

Marcs Houndstooth pleated skirt $179               Anna Dello Russo

I just adore the digital silk floral prints that are in fashion.  They are feminine and are a perfect foray into autumn in our warm Australian climate.  Camilla & Marc,  Lisa Ho and Jigsaw do some beautiful pieces.

Lisa Ho Dress $529                           Lisa Ho Dress $589

I am obsessed with this clutch from Marcs, it is large enough to carry some make up for touch ups and all your racing winnings!

Marcs Clutch Available in 3 Colours $149

Cue also has a selection of fantastic clutches.

Fur stole

The Australian climate sometimes doesn’t allow for this in March but how glamorous does a (faux) fur stole look!  Perhaps rock an Aurelio Costerella feather bolero instead?

Jigsaw Mongolian Collar $149

Aurelio Costarella Feather Bolero

A look that I think is very classy and fashionable for autumn is a pump with a colour blocked toe.  I love these Mimco ones with their special Perspex heel.  They are available in a couple of colours.  Saba and Milana (available at DJ’s)  also have some very  nice pairs available.   If you want to modernise a look that you feel is too classic, then go for a shoe with more of a platform.

Mimco Imperial Midi Pump $199.20

Saba Camden Shoe  $179

I really hope that you like some of these ideas.  Good luck at races!

Winter Wardrobe Finds

I’ve been doing a little Autumn / Winter wardrobe research (OK…. online shopping) recently and thought I would share some of my favourite finds with you;

Full Hearts Jumper $49.95 Dotti

What a fun and gorgeous knit! I would wear it with a pair of skinny jeans, ballet flats and some fun arm candy.

Feather Necklace $12.95 Colette Accessories

I am so loving feathers right now. This necklace is the perfect way to instantly take a plain outfit of jeans, white t-shirt, black blazer and heels to F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S! And all for $12.95. Happy days.

Ladakh Mirage Dress $129.95  Myer

Metallics are huge this season, I would wear this hot little number with a pair of killer heels and some fabulous earrings. (Courtesy of www.andandrea.com)

Coloured Animal Scarf $24.99 Forever New

Scarves are the ultimate trans-seasonal wardrobe staple and I can’t get enough of them. As soon as the weather starts to get a bit chilly, I’ll wear this little beauty with jeans and a top for an instant pop of colour.

Speckled Faux Fur Vest $103.96 Bardot

I have been eyeing these faux fur vests off since last season, they are so chic and glamorous – and for this price, it’s a steal! If I was feeling daring, I would rock it with the sequinned pants too.

Happy shopping lovely ladies!
