Five Minutes with Flannel

I was recently invited along to a VIP night where I discovered Flannel’s beautiful designs  – think luxurious fabrics in understated styles that you’ll want to wear again and again.  I took five to find out more about this fabulous Aussie label.

Tell us a bit about Flannel:

Creating luxurious garments that could be worn everyday was the philosophy behind Australian designer Kristy Lawrence when she began her label Flannel. What began as a capsule collection of cotton and knitted loungewear in a neutral pallete, the label has now expanded to encompass soft leathers, colour pops of velvets and unique prints, accessories, silk evening wear and home wares.

Flannel uniquely combines a vintage feel with a modern edge that has the ability to span the generations. Sometimes classic and other times quirky, at the core of all of the collections is the use of quality fabrics that provide longevity through its timeless style.  Flannel has five boutiques throughout Australia, that themselves reflect the chic bohemian personality of the designer. The label is also currently stocked in boutiques throughout America.  Flannel has created a label full of covetable everyday pieces.

If you could pick a celebrity to be the face of Flannel, who would it be and why?
I am thinking it would be Naomi Watts – she is a beautiful fresh faced Australian girl who would look amazing in any one of our garments. She is successful in her chosen career on an international stage, ambitious, friendly and a she’s a mum! All the things that we live and breathe at Flannel.

You use a lot of beautiful fabrics in your designs, where do you source them from?
We design our fabrics and prints in-house exclusively for Flannel, our production comes from different sources depending on the mood of the collection. Our next collection involves some exquisite beading and embroidery.

You have just opened a new store in Subiaco, Perth – congratulations! What else have you got planned for 2012?
We started the year with a trip to North America to explore how our brand fits into the American market. We have a very strong presence in America and would like to expand this, with the possibility of opening a shop in Los Angeles. We then leapt into the opening of our fifth store in Subiaco. A gorgeous white washed store that has our signature relaxed luxurious feel. The rest of 2012…..we are looking to open a store in Melbourne, a soiree showing in Sydney, launching our own basics range, expanding our shoe production…..the list goes on! It’s going to be very busy and exciting, so stay tuned!

Red Dress Obsession

Recently I’ve become obsessed with red dresses. It started when I spotted Michelle Williams in a stunning red lace Valentino creation at the SAG Awards.  She was just perfection in the bold coloured dress with it’s delicate lace detail. Then I spied Emily Thorne wearing a stunning Jason Wu number in the hot TV show Revenge, and I was hooked! (on the show AND the dress!) I’ve never actually owned a red dress before, but I have fallen in love with the colour and I’m going to dare to add something red to my wardrobe in the coming months.

Is there a look or colour that you’ve been obsessed with recently?

Five Minutes with Pia from Luxestaples

Pia Donaldson is the owner and creator of the fabulous, I took five minutes to find out a bit more about the face behind the luxury basics site.  Enjoy! A xx

Pia Donaldson of Luxestaples

Tell us a bit about yourself

I have a double degree in Advertising and PR and began my career as a website editor for a well-known, Perth-based online retailer. I have always been interested in fashion but it wasn’t until I moved to London at 25 that my passion for the industry really emerged. I have a serious obsession with shoes, idle celebrity gossip and bad reality TV, online shopping (for anything and everything)…and my two dogs!

How did Luxestaples come about?

I had spent aaaaages looking for a white tee – one I could wear with jeans on the weekend and possibly team with a necklace for nights out – and I couldn’t find one ANYWHERE – online or in a bricks and mortar store. After an endless search,  I thought “wouldn’t it be great to have one shop dedicated to good quality basics”. I had a pretty demanding job at the time and was (and still am!) an avid online shopper because of its convenience. I believe in investing in good basics as well, since I wear them all the time, and after chatting to some friends about the idea – it was clear I wasn’t alone in my search. As a result, was born. It’s safe to say, I finally found my white tee (I have a whole shop to choose from now!)

What’s your personal style?  Who are your style icons?

I think I have a pretty laid back style. I’m loving the toned down look with pops of colour at the moment. I also have a soft spot for printed pants and a statement necklace. I love Jessica Alba’s style – she’s always classic yet fun and knows how to work the basic tee, jeans & scarf combo. I also have a slight style crush on Elizabeth Olsen. She has such a refined, polished look but still with a little personality and quirkiness.

What can we look forward to seeing in the coming months at Luxestaples?

We’re super excited to have just introduced our first denim label to the store, James Jeans from California, and are looking forward to our first jewellery label, also from L.A, dropping at the end of April. We have some beautiful winter pieces coming in (think faux fur, shearling vests, comfy leggings and soft ponchos) including a new scarf line. Spring will see a number of new designers, both national and international, added to our mix. It’s all very exciting – so stay tuned!

Parisian Chic

When my own fashion mentor from super style blog And Andrea mentioned this book in one of her posts, I just had to find a copy of my own. My love for anything French PLUS fashion combined in one gorgeous little red package was impossible to resist!

Written by former Chanel model and muse Ines de la Fressange, Parisian Chic is a very clever and insightful guide into how Parisian women get their chic on.

In the beginning of her book, Ines says ‘The Parisian will rave about a great find in the supermarket… her wardrobe is a clever mix of cheap and affordable buys, holiday purchases and a handful of luxury pieces.’ Now that’s my kind of girl!

Ines encourages women to mix it up and be more adventurous, but to always be totally comfortable with what we are wearing. In short, she dares us to be fashion savvy – not fashion victims.

She then goes on to talk about the fashion basics that every woman should have in her wardrobe, and explains how to wear them with a twist – for example a black blazer with the sleeves pushed up and worn with a belt. She shares dozens of little tips that seem simple enough, but try them out and it’s amazing how little details really do make a big difference.

Ines touches on which accessories make a big statement, and even dedicates a chapter to ‘Fashion SOS’ which provides a guideline on what to wear to black tie events, impromptu dinner parties and cocktail parties.

She also shares some of her beauty tips, and is refreshingly relaxed and honest in her approach.  In short, she says to take good care of yourself but to loosen up a little and let go…. such a typically fabulous French attitude!

Parisian Chic finishes off with a ‘Chez Moi’ chapter and Ines’s own guide to Paris, including boutiques, cafes, museums and even a secret Belle Epoque gem toilet!

This book will inspire you to create chic new outfits with items you already have in your wardrobe, and to be more confident and adventurous when shopping for new clothes.

Parisian Chic makes a beautiful gift for any fashionista or stylish jet setter who is Paris bound. Or it could be a delightful treat for yourself. You can find Parisian Chic in your local bookstore or online here.

What fashion books have inspired you to get your chic on?

Five minutes with Lara from Zhivago

Lara and Lydia of Zhivago

With Perth Fashion Week just around the corner, I thought it would be great to catch up with Lara Kovacevich, one half of WA design duo Zhivago, and find out what’s been happening and what we can expect from their upcoming collection.

How has the past year been for Zhivago?

We have had the most crazy busy year and it has been so amazing. We have just celebrated our 1 year anniversary and in that time we have done three collections, a trade show, a show for PFF, dressed numerous celebrities and signed with a US agent as well as being stocked through Australia. So it seems the busier the better for us!

Nicole Trunfio in Zhivago

Where do you find inspiration for your designs and collections?

We design for ourselves first, what we love, what we would like to wear and what we haven’t been able to find. Each season we pick an inspiration and use that for our shapes, we don’t look to other designers and what they are doing and I think that shows in the clothes. Our shapes are very strong, we love sharp tailoring and using leathers (you will see more of this when winter is released on April 1st), we have been told our look is very European, especially for an Australian label. Summer was a bit of a hint towards the true style of the label but this winter collection will really define the label and its shapes. The winter collection was received really well by the stores so that’s really exciting for us.

What can we expect to see for the SS13 collection?

We can promise we are going more into colour, our first summer collection was quite dark and this new summer collection is more refined, totally different but still very Zhivago in the shapes and tailoring. We aren’t allowed to reveal anything until the PFW show!!

Who are your style icons?

Lydia and I both love Lady Gaga, Milla Jovovich and Daphne Guiness. We love their edgy style and the fact that they will take risks for fashion.

Zhivago are launching their SS13 collection on Saturday 21st April during Perth Fashion Week. For tickets to the show and after party, see here.

Just in case you missed it, here is the F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S trailer for Advanced Style, a documentary about stylish older New York ladies scheduled to come out later this year. This video will make your day and make you want to wear something a little crazy;

This trailer comes via the amazing style blog And Andrea

 I’m SO loving these quotes:

‘Lately I’ve been so hungry for colour’

‘I think it’s fun to dress up, it’s an exercise in creativity and it makes you feel better’

‘I am dressed up for the theatre of my life every day’

Enjoy and stay fabulous lovely ladies!
