Christmas Gift Ideas : Home Made Rocky Road

Featured

During the festive season, you often need lovely little gifts for friends, family, work colleagues and neighbours. This delicious rocky road is a great alternative to a bottle of wine or box of chocolates and is so easy to make, looks beautiful displayed around the house and is also child and allergy friendly as it doesn’t contain any nuts. I made a batch, filled three clean, empty Glasshouse candle jars, tied some festive ribbon around the jars and voilà! Not only do they look great, they are so convenient to have on hand to take to a Christmas catch up.  Next time I’ll create some tags to complete the look.

My lovely friend Alicia gave this recipe to me, so many thanks to her for sharing!

Bistro Guillaume Opening – Crown Perth

Featured

Crown Perth officially opened it’s new restaurant Bistro Guillaume with a lavish soiree over the weekend. Endless rounds of french champagne and cocktails were enjoyed along with freshly shucked oysters, scallops, wagyu beef skewers and escargot.

Bistro Guillaume’s black, white and green decor is strikingly opulent and inviting, and the view of the pool is world class – you could easily be in Dubai, Miami or Las Vegas.

Designer Lara Kovacevich chatted with Emma Milner about Zhivago’s hot new season harness pants.

I caught up with Helen Bossi who looked stunning in her shimmering, sequinned dress.

Johnny Rufffo popped into the party to say hello and was a big hit with the ladies.

Lara Kovacevich with the ever colourful and effervescent Jenna Clarke who was covering the swanky event for WA Today.  Be sure to check out her take on the evening!

For the grand finale, guests were treated to poolside espresso martinis, chocolate truffles, macarons and salted caramels while enjoying an incredible fireworks display.

Crown Perth has evolved into a truly world class venue with the recent additions of Rockpool, Nobu, Bistro Guillaume and The Merrywell.

Good Food Guide Awards 2013

Last night we attended The West Australian Good Food Guide launch and awards for 2013 at the recently opened and very impressive Print Hall,  Brookfield Place in Perth.

I was lucky enough to meet Rockpool’s Neil Perry, food critic extraordinaire Rob Broadfield and Guillaume Brahimi whose restaurant Bistro Guillaume is opening at Crown Perth over the weekend.

Print Hall is an incredible four level space which was the original home of The West Australian Newspaper and has now been converted into a hospitality venue complete with rooftop terrace, bars and dining rooms.  The attention to detail in restoring the original detailing combined with all the beautiful new additions is truly breathtaking.

I caught up with the lovely Denise Cheir, PR Manager at Crown Perth.  Denise has had the most fascinating life with stints in Mexico, the Maldives, New York, has lived all across Australia and now happily calls Perth home.

How amazing is this giant cheese display?

I also ran into gorgeous WAG Rayne Embley, who had a night off from running Beluga, a restaurant that her and West Coast Eagles hubby Andrew Embley co-own.  Rayne has been working 12 hour shifts while looking after two young children, and she STILL manages to look glamorous.

Guests indulged in free flowing wine and champagne and enjoyed delicious canapés and oysters, freshly shucked by Perth’s oyster King Jerry Fraser.

The big winners of the evening were Restaurant Amusé, Rockpool Bar and Grill, Petite Mort, Red Cabbage, Clarkes of North Beach, 1907, Andaluz, Divido, Must Winebar, Nine Nine Food and The Trustee.

Nobu – Crown Perth

Nobu is my all time favourite restaurant,  I just love everything about it – the ambience, decor, service and above all – the food. (We went to the official opening with special guest Robert De Niro back in March – check out the post here.)

The occasion was a birthday catch up with two amazing friends who I worked with over ten years ago.  Our friendship has seen us through stints in Japan and Dubai and somehow we have maintained our special connection and always manage to pick up where we left off.  I’m so lucky to have these fabulous and funny girls in my life.

My favourite Nobu dish is yellowtail sashimi with jalapeños; it’s an explosion of citrus, coriander and soy with the perfect amount of jalapeño heat. I could quite happily go to Nobu for this dish alone.  It’s so unbelievably good that one dish wasn’t enough, we had to have two!

I also love how Nobu dishes are designed for sharing, this is my favourite way to eat – to enjoy a little bit of everything.  Next up was a creamy, spicy prawn tempura, pork belly miso caramel and beef toban-yaki – all deliciously divine.

We also indulged in dessert – we shared the miso cappuccino which was a decadent blend of chocolate brûlée, chocolate coffee crumble, cappuccino foam and vanilla ice cream.  On our previous visit we had ordered the Ichigo and decided that we couldn’t possibly pass it up – it’s just too good. A crunchy, icy yuzu granita on top of strawberry pannacotta and lychee – it’s a tasty, textural sensation.

Nobu Perth overlooks the recently revamped pool area and the view is just stunning – very Miami come Las Vegas.  The bar is also a great spot for cocktails with a sensational amber light pendant feature.

If you haven’t experienced Nobu yet, then make it your next special occasion destination – you won’t be disappointed.

Piccolos Corner Cafe

It was a very happy coincidence when one of my friends suggested brunch at Piccolos Corner after Perth breakfast Queen Liz Sheehan from The Breakfast Confidential had recommended it to me.  Oh happy day.

Piccolos Corner is nestled in lush West Leederville and is (funnily enough!) the corner of a house that has been converted into a cosy cafe which is bursting with character.

The menu provides some delicious choices, and there’s so much more not included on the menu – home made cakes, slices, biscuits, muffins and freshly squeezed juices.

The coffee is really good and if you are dining in – it’s served in a delicate antique tea cup but if you like a decent sized cup of coffee, I would order it in a takeaway cup.

I was trying to decide between the avocado and lime or scrambled eggs and opted for the eggs at the last minute.  This means I’ll have to go back super soon to try the avocado and lime with bacon and feta – YUM!

My friend ordered the home made beans with chorizo and said it was truly delicious.

Piccolos Corner also has a fun old fashioned styled lolly counter, it took me back to days of chocolate buttons, freckles and musk sticks.

The inside of the cafe is quite small, but there is a bigger garden area outside.  We headed there around mid morning and I was lucky enough to grab a bench outside, but there was a bit of a wait for other people to get tables, one family even resorted to going home and getting their own tables and chairs. I loved it!

After brunch I had a quick look at some of the beautiful character homes in the street and stopped to admire this gorgeous cherry blossom tree, wishing I could take it home with me.

Piccolos Corner is definitely worth a visit if you enjoy good food and coffee made with love, with loads of character and charm on the side.
